Glantraeth 5 Holywell 2

Glantraeth all but condemned Holywell Town to relegation from the Cymru Alliance League in a game that Holywell Town fought for everything from the first to the last minute and credit must be given to them for this. They were in familiar territory as for a number of seasons they have avoided relegation at the eleventh hour. Manager Simon Sedgewick's cause was not helped as earlier in the week he saw his first choice goalkeeper Stuart Bidswell sent off and as such he was serving a suspension for today's game. Dale Lovatt usually an outfield player stood in and Sedge made a number of changes to the side that narrowly beat Glantraeth 1-0 last month. Brett Jones and Lee Jones coming into the defence and youngster Steve Thomas bolstering the strike force. Paul Whelan himself made a couple of changes with Kevin Roberts back in after a virus and Simon Kay back in the defence. The first opportunity of the game fell to Mark Thomas who headed over the bar from a Simon Kay cross. Glantraeth opened the scoring on 11 Min's, from a Kevin Roberts corner Mark Thomas headed against the post and the rebound fell kindly for Gareth Owen to get a rare goal from close range. At the other end John Haseldine went very close with a free kick. Then Simon Kay dragged a good shot wide of the post. Rob Williams then found space and delivered a perfect cross to the far post for Mark Thomas to put the home side 2-0 up after only 20 Min's. Five minutes Glantraeth were indebted to Simon Kay as he cleared a Simon Holloway header off the goal line. Then two minutes later Dave Nottage broke through the Glantraeth rearguard to shoot hard and low past the outstretched hand of Glantraeth keeper Steve Thomas. With 36 Min's on the clock Rob Williams who was having a good game picked out Darren Gowans at the far post with a cross that he met perfectly to head in and make in 3-1. As the half time whistle about to be blown Kevin Roberts put in a good ball to Rob Williams he took on the last defender and hit a great shot past Lovatt into the top of the net 4-1. That was the half time score.
Within five minutes of the restart Glantraeth went further ahead as what can only be described as pinball took place in the visitors 18 yard box. Nigel Barry hit the original shot that cannoned off the post the goalkeeper tried to gather but spilled the ball it fell to Mark Thomas his effort came back off a defender fell to Kevin Roberts and he rifled the shot into the net to make it 5-1. Darren Jones then hit a fierce drive that Lovatt did well to tip over the bar. At this point Glantraeth were all over Holywell, but they just would not give in. Kevin Roberts had a half chance after some good build up play before for the second home game running Glantraeth were awarded a free kick against them for a back pass to the keeper. Mike Allsopp drove a shot at the defencive wall that came off the outstretched leg of Kevin Roberts and ended up in the net 5-2. Dave Nottage then got clean through but hit his shot wildly over the bar. Holywell were certainly not going to lie down and came at Glantraeth with everything they had. Mark Thomas shot wildly over when in a good position and Emyr Rowlands fluffed an effort that was set up by Nigel Barry. Some sloppy play by the home side almost let Nottage in for another goal but he blazed over. Then Rob Williams forced a good save from Lovatt.
