Mynydd Isa 0 Glantraeth 1
Report by Stan Strickland

Glantraeth moved into the top six with this second successive away victory in a hard fought game that saw clear cut goal chances at a premium.

The opening forty-five minutes were evenly contested with both sides having chances to secure a half-time advantage.

Glan’s leading scorer Jonathan Peris Jones posed danger in the opening minute after being put clear down the right by Rob Williams. His cross was half cleared to Chris Saxon whose shot was charged down in a crowded area.

Gareth Wyn Roberts came within a whisker of opening the scoring for the visitors on 18 minutes as his effort on goal passed inches the wrong side of an upright.

Isa then threatened as striker Chris Boulton got behind the Glan defence but faced with an advancing Gareth OJ Roberts he shot well over. On 27 minutes the home side had an even better chance as a long ball over the defence this time left Craig Williams with a clear run on goal but his shot was wildly off target.

Isa had a let off on the half-hour mark as keeper Ryan Roberts spilled Emyr Rowlands’ cross and Peris Jones shot into the side netting then Rob Williams let fly from twenty yards but got under the ball and it passed harmlessly over.

Richard F Owen rescued Glan on the stroke of half time with a superbly timed tackled on Craig Williams as he shaped to shoot.

Following the interval the visitors began to take control but dogged defending by the home side were making goal chances difficult to engineer. The closest to an opener came on 63 minutes as substitute Paul Rowlands brought a full length save from Roberts. Two minutes later Peris Jones showed great determination with a powerful run down the right ending with a low cross that was desperately scrambled away by a home defence under increasing pressure, Chris Saxon heading over from the resulting corner kick.

Six minutes from time a perfect Paul Rowlands’ ball in from the right found an unmarked Gareth Wyn Roberts only twelve yards out but Glan’s number 10 failed to connect cleanly and his shot went disappointingly wide.

With that miss it looked as if Glan’s second half control in which keeper OJ Roberts had largely been unemployed was not to be rewarded with maximum points but three minutes later Wyn Roberts was transformed from villain to hero as he burst into the area and powerfully headed home a Peris Jones free kick to finally kill off the stubborn resistance of Isa. A minute later Peris Jones came close to adding to his goal tally as his shot beat the keeper only to drift tantalisingly wide of the far post.

Glantraeth: Gareth OJ Roberts, Jonathan Peris Jones, Darren Jones, Llion Davies, Sion Parry, Richard F Owen, Rob Williams (Osian Pritchard 73), Chris Saxon, Paul Tilbury (Paul Rowlands 56), Gareth Wyn Roberts, Emyr Rowlands.
