League Champions Prestatyn Town were applauded on to the field and left with the Championship Trophy but the game itself saw Glantraeth on top for long periods and the final scoreline was something of a mystery. Defensively Glan were not at their best and the visitors took full advantage to run out 4-2 winners.
The home side went ahead in the third minute as a shot from Jonathan Peris Jones was blocked, rebounding to Gareth Wyn Roberts who struck a powerful shot through a crowd of players and into the bottom corner with keeper John Dunt well beaten.
Prestatyn should have pulled level four minutes later as a ball in from the left found Dave Hayes unmarked five yards out but he scooped the ball well over.
Prestatyn were having their best spell of the game at this stage and a mix-up in the home defence led to a free kick being awarded on the edge of the area on 12 minutes. Steve Bowes and Gareth Davies both shaped to take the kick but it was Davies who stepped up to curl the ball into the bottom corner.
From that moment on it was the Anglesey side who were the dominant force, Paul Rowlands shooting wide then Dunt making a good save from Chris Saxon. On 28 minutes Glan were unlucky not to go back in front as Paul Rowlands drilled in a left foot shot that came back off the inside of a post. Rowlands twice went close as Glan continued to pressure the champions then the visitors enjoyed another stroke of luck as a goalbound Gerallt Jones effort struck a defender almost on the line.
It was tough on Glantraeth that they fell behind on the stroke of half-time as the league’s leading scorer Steve Bowes showed his pedigree as he took possession 25 yards out before turning his marker and firing home with a shot that beat keeper Gareth OJ Roberts low to his left.
Again the pressure was on Prestatyn following the interval with Chris Saxon heading over then the same player saw a second header blocked only for Wyn Roberts to pounce with yet another shot cleared off the line. On 63 minutes equality was restored as Richard Owen was tripped in the box and Wyn Roberts comfortably despatched the penalty for his ninth strike of the season.
At this time it seemed that Glan would likely go on and win the game but four minutes later they again shot themselves in the foot as a hopeful punt upfield left Ian Griffiths one on one with OJ Roberts and the Prestatyn number 10 made no mistake. On 70 minutes the visitors went two goals ahead as Bowes released Griffiths to score his second.
Glan continued to monopolise possession but the game had now slipped away from them although they went close in the closing moments as keeper Dunt made a flying save from Chris Saxon’s 25 yard volley.
