Glantraeth 3 Buckley 1

Buckley Town came to Glantraeth's Bodorgan base sporting an excellent unbeaten run that stretched back to 17th December 2005, around four months and a total of thirteen league games without a defeat. They were then comprehensively beaten by a Glantraeth side who took the game to them from the off, harried for every ball and defended steadfastly when needed. The game was a spectacle of entertainment for home and visiting supporters alike. Two well taken headed goals from Mark Thomas and a close range tap in from Nigel Barry with an individual effort from Buckley's prolific goalscorer Graham Randles was what in the end separated the 2005 Champions Buckley Town and Runners Up Glantraeth. On today's performance don't be surprised if both of these sides finish this season in the top two positions in the League again, but in what order has still to be determined.
Kevin Roberts was presented with the first after Nigel Barry split the Buckley defence, but as Kevin was about to shot the ball took a wicked bobble and he was off target. Glantraeth took the lead on 9 Min's when a free kick to Craig Roberts saw him find namesake Kevin who chipped the ball to the far post where Mark Thomas played the ball across the goal to Nigel Barry for a simple tap in 1-0. Another free kick just outside the area then taken by Kevin Roberts found Mark Thomas but his flicked header was over the bar. A minute later Buckley almost pulled a goal back as a free kick by Craig Goodwin picked out Steve Hughes who's header rebounded off the bar. As play swung to the other end Craig Roberts linked with Lee Dixon but he fluffed the chance as he elected to place the ball into the net when he maybe should have gone for power.Rob Williams then flashed an effort that went right accross the face of the goal, before Nigel Barry forced Paul Turner the visiting keeper into a fine parried save from a powerful shot, from the resulting corner Mark Thomas headed over the bar. On 32 Min's Rob Williams then just outside the area turned and shot but he was just off target. Glantraeth were in complete control and dominating the game in all departments. On 38 Min's Simon Richards tried his luck from a Kevin Breeze corner but it was over the bar, then Craig Goodwin hit a good chance wide. In the 43rd minute a great move lead to Glantraeth increasing their lead as a Kevin Roberts free kick picked out Warren Gibbs who headed the ball on in the area to the far post where Mark Thomas was waiting, his downward header beat keeper Turner to put the Bodorgan lads 2-0 up. Justice was then done after what was a nothing challenge in the area lead to the official deciding to award a penalty, it was obvious by their reaction that even the Buckley side did not think it was a penalty. However up strode Stephen Hughes who tried to place to his right home custodian Steve Thomas guessed correctly and save the penalty at the foot of the post. The second half proved to be just as entertaining as the first and after good battling by Nigel Barry Glantraeth won a free kick, from the kick Mark Thomas header was just tipped over the bar by Turner. The official then awarded Buckley a free kick on the edge of the six yard box after a back pass Glantraeth players crowded the goal line and Kevin Breeze clipped the foot of the post as the ball rebounded off the legs of a defender. Fresh legs for Glantraeth then as Paul Whelan brought on Gareth Davies with his first touch he managed to get through round the keeper and his shot was just saved by a defenders outstretched foot for a corner. The corner taken by Rob Williams found Mark Thomas who hit a shot the clipped the crossbar. Davies then got through again but his shot was saved at the post by Turner. James Morton then in a rare sortie up field for Buckley had a half chance wide. In quick succession then Gareth Davies twice then had a chance to put the home side further ahead, the first the keeper somehow save with a knee after Gareth had been put in by Lee Dixon, the second he shot over after a good pass by Rob Williams. On 69 Min's Mark Thomas got his second goal of the game when heading in well from a Rob Williams corner. Buckley's Craig Goodwin saw a good effort well save by home keeper Thomas. A good individual effort by prolific scorer Graham Randles pull a goal back, he skirted past a couple of players on the edge of the area and hit a shot into the bottom corner. Darren Gowans then came on and in a run down the left hit a shot Turner saved well. Rob William then saw an effort saved by Turner. In a frantic final five minutes Buckley were relieved as their defence stood up to two goalmouth scrambles, the first involved Gowans, Mark Thomas and Rob Williams and the second Gowans, Mark Thomas and Davies who try as they might could not get the vital touch needed. The game went into several minutes of added on time without any further incident. A thoroughly deserved victory in the end that keeps Glantraeth in with a shout of wherever the League title will end up at the end of the season.
