Three goals in a four minute spell finally saw off the challenge of bottom club Lex XI as Glantraeth ran out 5-1 winners. However, the scoreline hardly tells the full story of a game whose outcome was still in doubt with less than ten minutes remaining, the visitors having provided a much sterner test than had been anticipated.
Glantraeth had taken the lead in the 13th minute as Jonathan Peris Jones provided the cross for Gareth Wyn Roberts to side-foot home. A couple more Peris Jones’ runs on goal came to nothing before Lex pulled level on 38 minutes as Joe Garner fired home a free kick from the edge of the area following a trip on Rene Pinnard.
Lex had a great chance to take the lead on the half-time whistle only for Dale Hill to sky the ball well over from only five yards out.
The opening to the second period was frantic as both sides created chances in turn, Mark Williams off target for Lex and Paul Tilbury and Peris Jones threatening for Glantraeth.
Substitute Paul Rowlands was making a difference and one testing cross was only inches away from Chris Saxon. Lex continued to look dangerous with both Williams and Gary Penlington failing to make good contact with balls across goal that had Glan struggling.
Peris Jones and Paul Rowlands both had efforts on goal before Glan at last went back in front on 72 minutes. A trip on Peris Jones led to a clear penalty decision but with Glantraeth’s regular penalty taker having to go off for treatment following the foul Wyn Roberts took responsibility and struck home the perfect spot kick.
There was more drama in the 80th minute as Paul Rowlands was adjudged to have handled the ball and Lex were awarded a penalty. Gary Penlington struck the ball to the right of Gareth OJ Roberts but Glan’s keeper was down quickly to save.
It proved an expensive miss as Glantraeth took complete charge of the final ten minutes going further ahead on 83 minutes as Sion Parry’s cross from the right found Osian Pritchard who drilled home a powerful shot from an acute angle. A minute later a Paul Rowlands free kick was headed home by Paul Tilbury and the best move of the game ended with Chris Saxon finishing well on 86 minutes to seal victory.
