Glantraeth 4 Gresford Athletic 0
Report by Stan Strickland

The league table looked a great deal healthier for Glantraeth following this four goal triumph over Gresford Athletic as they jumped five places although the game was marred by a serious injury to Gresfordís Richard Carr in the final ten minutes that saw him rushed to hospital with a suspected broken ankle.

Glan started like they meant business as Paul Tilbury volleyed them into the lead after just eight minutes, connecting perfectly with a Kevin Robertsí cross. Gerallt Jones and Gareth Owen were then narrowly off target as Glan continued to press.

A miss-kick by Jon Peris Jones almost let in Gresfordís Jon Taylor on 12 minutes but his effort sailed well over and it was soon the home side threatening again as Darren Jones won the ball before firing just wide.

Glantraeth opened a two goal lead on 24 minutes and again Tilbury was involved, sending in a cross from the left that caused all kinds of confusion in the visitorís defence before Chris Saxon forced the ball home under pressure.

The visitors continued to look for openings and a good effort from Simon Smith went close before Glantraeth made it three on 29 minutes as Rob Williams curled a beauty into the top corner from 20 yards out, an early contender for goal of the season.

The action was relentless with the home side looking like scoring in every attack with Gresford always looking to counter but the game was all but over on 33 minutes as Gerallt Jones scored his fifth of the season with an angled shot that went in off the inside of a post and the same player had the chance to make it 5-0 ten minutes later after Kevin Roberts had been felled in the area only to fire the penalty kick high and wide.

Gresford manager Alan Jones roasted his team on the pitch during the half-time break and it seemed to have some effect as they never looked quite as vulnerable during a second period that lacked the excitement of the first with Rob Williams and Paul Rowlands coming closest to adding to the home goals tally with shots that didn't test keeper Gareth Rowland and Ian Matthias threatening to pull a goal back for the visitors after a poor kick by home keeper Gareth Hughes went straight to him only for Hughes to rescue the situation with a fine save.

Glantraeth: Gareth Hughes, Jon Peris Jones, Darren Jones, Llion Davies, Gareth Owen (Jason Thomas 73), Richard F Owen, Rob Williams (Paul Rowlands 66), Chris Saxon, Gerallt Jones, Kevin Roberts, Paul Tilbury (Nigel Barry 66).
