The introduction of substitute Osian Pritchard on 78 minutes looked to have proved a masterstroke by manager Paul Whelan as with his first touch fifty seconds later he smashed the ball into the net after the ball was squared by Emyr Rowlands, rounding off a fine passing move and putting Glantraeth 2-1 in the lead. Buckley looked a well beaten side at this stage as the visitors threatened to add to their lead with every attack but with three minutes remaining the home side gained an unlikely equaliser as Rob Williams connected with a corner kick swung over by Matty Roberts to head home at the near post.
The game had started in unspectacular fashion with Chris Saxon carrying the first threat for the Anglesey side on 9 minutes as he drilled in a shot, forcing home keeper Louis Macklin into a good reaction save. Buckley’s Rob Williams was well off target three minutes later as he met a long ball in from the right.
Saxon was again the danger for Glan as good play from Gareth Wyn Roberts on the left set up the chance but this time Macklin went full length to save and push the ball around the post.
There had been little to choose between the sides in the opening period but it was Buckley who stole the advantage on 26 minutes as Alan Dawson ran through to score, all too easily evading attempts to stop him, and ten minutes later Simon Holloday missed a clear opportunity to add a second, slicing the ball wide when clear on goal.
Saxon had looked Glantraeth’s most likely scorer and it was no surprise when he rose above defenders to head home Richard Owen’s well flighted free kick four minutes before the break and restore equality.
The second period proved a succession of near misses for the visitors as they gained a measure of control. A Paul Rowlands cross almost dropped in with the keeper beaten on 46 minutes and a minute later a Buckley defender almost put through his own goal under pressure. On 50 minutes Gerallt Jones beat the last defender and his angled shot towards the unguarded goal looked destined to give Glan the lead only for Matty Roberts to race back and complete a brilliant clearance. On the hour mark Saxon got in a header that was saved and three minutes later volleyed over.
On 72 minutes Buckley looked possible scorers as Rob Williams closed in on goal only for Emyr Rowlands to slide in for a tackle and deflect the ball over. Osian Pritchard’s quickfire goal seven minutes later sparked a series of attacks from the visitors with Paul Rowlands, Jonathan Peris Jones and Richard Owen all going close.
On 83 minutes Chris Saxon, who had been a thorn in Buckley’s side throughout, cleverly created a shooting chance but found Macklin well positioned to save and just as it seemed a matter of time before Glan wrapped up the points with a third goal Williams struck at the other end against the run of play. Even then David Alan Jones had a golden opportunity to regain the lead within a minute as with the home side appealing for offside a Paul Rowlands’ cross found him unmarked with only the keeper to beat but unfortunately his looping header was just to high and passed harmlessly over.
